Meaning of Om Mani Padme Hum

“It is very good to recite the mantra Om mani padme hum, but while you are doing it, you should be thinking on its meaning, for the meaning of the six syllables is great and vast…

The first, Om (A', O', Ma) symbolizes the practitioner’s impure body, speech, and mind; it also symbolizes the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.

The path is indicated by the next four syllables. Mani, meaning jewel, symbolizes the factors of method: (the) altruistic intention to become enlightened, compassion, and love.

The two syllables, padme, meaning lotus, symbolize wisdom

Purity must be achieved by an indivisible unity of method and wisdom, symbolized by the final syllable hum, which indicates indivisibility.

Thus the six syllables, om mani padme hum, mean that in dependence on the practice of a path which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech, and mind into the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha.

Praying/meditating Avalokitesvara through Om mani padma hum.
•  Three triple gems
•  Six sentient beings
•  Sufferings

We take refuge under Buddha as he is elightenment and teacher. Dharma as a path and Sangha as friend on the way to learn buddhist.  So these are called three triple gems in Buddhist.  Dharma has two types: philosophical book and realisation through practice or metitation.
While we chant "om mani padma hum", We take refugee to Avalokitesvara as trile gems; his body is Sangha, his speech is Dharma and his mind/heart is Buddha. He sits in the centre of a moon disc that lies on top of a white lotus flower. The colour of his body, his ritual implements, ornaments appear perfectly and complete. Buddha Amitabha, his lord sits on this head.  Then one should think he/she together with one's present father on the right, mother on the left, while all sentient beings of six realms are in front with one.
In Awalokitesvara's presence, together with your parent and all beings, one pays respect with the body by prostration, with speech by reciting the words of taking refuge and with the mind by thinking strong devotion. since from now on until i get enlightenment, there is no refuge or hope, protection than you. we trust you and we will rely on you. We offer you our body, speech and mind.
( all sentient beings and i take refuge under you with great respect. you are our root lama. you are Buddha, Sanga and Dharma.  One should take refuge this way three, seven, twenty one or a hundred times.  Or we chant the mantra three, seven, twentyone or hundret times.

When we take refuge, our mind focus on enlightment. its good if mind has turn toward triple gems but to get enlightenment is fully depends on whether or not bodhicitta has arise in mind or not.
whatever amount of good one can accomplish, without campassion, its impossible
to get englightment as according what i learnt from teacher. The method for reaching buddhahood is Bodhicitta. Thinking of other or an attitude of benefitting other in practice is called bodhisattvayana-mahayana.

Or these six words symbolise six sentient beings which are three higher realm and three lower realm.  Hell being, Hungry ghost being, Animal, Demi-god, Long living god and Human being. The buddhist dharma says that all these sentient beings are subject to suffering. With thinking all these suffering, stay cross-leg posture, do breath meditation. Again you need strong campassion toward all beings,
